Spanish woman who beat Spanish Flu, now beats coronavirus at 106

We have heard of miracles in stories and witnessed them in films. But in a rare chance, here is a real-life life miracle.

Madrid: The Olive Press, a Spain-based English newspaper, in 1918, had reported about a young girl – Ana del Valle, who suffered and recovered from the deadly pandemic, Spanish Flu. The pandemic lasted 36 months and infected over 500 million.

One-hundred-and-two years later, the same girl – now 106 – braved another pandemic, the coronavirus.

We have heard of miracles in stories and witnessed them in films. But in a rare chance, here is a real-life life miracle. Beating the deadly virus, the grandmother is safe with her family in Ronda.

Ray of hope
Valle lived in a nursing home in Alcale del Valle when she contracted the virus along with sixty other residents. On testing, she was then transferred to a hospital in La Linea. She was discharged a few days ago, after overcoming the contagion.

Born in October 1913, the Spanish woman will turn 107 in less than six months. This makes her the second-oldest survivor of the current pandemic after the 107-year-old Dutch woman, Cornelia Ras.

While speaking to a local media source – Malaga Hoy, Paqui Sanchez, the daughter-in-law of the survivor, said that her family was very grateful for everything the hospital staff has done. But then, the authorities are taking it slow due to her old age.

"Her doctors tell us that she has very good results, but you have to be very careful," she told the Malaga-based newspaper. "She eats alone, some days more and other days less. She also goes on short walks with her walker," added Sanchez.

According to other reports, two other 101-year-old women have also recovered from disease in Spain.

Spain is one of the worst-hit countries with a total of 22,902 official COVID-19-related fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic. While the total number of cases recorded stand at 223,759; the total number of recovered and discharged patients are 95,708. On Sunday, the health ministry reported a total of 288 deaths in the last 24 hours, which is the lowest since March 21.

As per the US-based Johns Hopkins University, globally there are more than 2,915,368 cases reported of which 203,534 have died due to the pandemic. The total number of recovered patients stands at 827,808.
