Gandhi's Statue wreaked in the US, Indian Embassy registers a complaint

Unknown delinquents have defaced a statue of Mahatma Gandhi with graffiti and spray painting outside the US Indian embassy, prompting the mission officials to register a complaint with local law enforcement agencies. The incident happened in Washington DC on the interceding night of June 2 and 3, according to the reports. The law enforcement agencies that are locally based are investigating the case after a complaint was filed by the Indian Embassy explaining the devastation caused to the statue. They a have kept the State government on loop as well.

Wednesday, Metropolitan Police had deployed a group of officials to detect the situation, investigate the matter and run inquiries after discussing the matter with the National Park Police and Diplomatic Security Service. Amidst a series of countrywide protests against the death of African-American man George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25, the devastation of the statue of the proponent of peace and tranquillity comes as a major shock. These protestors have become aggressive and the protests are turning brutal which has led to the destruction of respected and esteemed monuments in the US. This week, Protestors have wreaked havoc in the city destroying major possessions, buildings and properties. They also burnt a prestigious old church along with damaging historical places like the Lincoln Memorial and the national monument. One of the few statues of a foreign leader in Washington DC, on federal land, Mahatma Gandhi's statue was dedicated by then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of then-President Bill Clinton, during his state visit to the US on September 16, 2000.

The government of India, in October 1998, was sanctioned by the US Congress to institute and manage a memorial statue “to honour Mahatma Gandhi on federal Land in the District of Columbia.” The statue is made of bronze with a height of 8 feet 8 inches, according to information reported on the Indian Embassy web site. The statue showcases Gandhi in a marching position as a leader and an energetic and motivating person commemorating his 1930 's march protesting against the salt tax and the several marches he led throughout India. The statue was designed by Gautam Pal as a present from the Indian Council of cultural relations (ICCR).
