Yuvraj Singh lends support to Shahid Afridi’s coronavirus initiatives; delivers message on the pandemic

Yuvraj Singh has proved the globe that once you bestow your life to your desire, then even the highest mountains can be conquered. Yuvraj’s life has been a road of excellent opportunities with the occasionally closed doors, a battle with cancer and the most powerful of comebacks.

Yuvraj had his fair share of struggles at a young age and was sent to Mumbai to join the Elf-Vengsarkar Cricket Academy, escorted by his father Yograj Singh, a former Indian fast bowler. The left-handed batsman made his debut in 2000 against Kenya in ICC Champions Trophy, and there began an illustrious career. From the U-19 World Cup 2000 win to 2002 NatWest win to 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj has done enough to make the country proud.

The cricketer, who retired from international cricket last year spoke about his experiences on fear and urged people to stay positive during the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking about the lockdown, Yuvraj told Sportstar, “I think this has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s heartbreaking to see so many people dying all over the world. It is spreading so fast. People, rather than panicking, should visit the official health sites (WHO and Union Health Ministry) to really understand what the disease is.

“In my case of cancer, I was also very scared in the beginning, but then I got the right information, went to the right doctor and hospital. Please understand that these government and official health sites will guide you accurately because there is rampant misinformation about the virus on social media. First of all, people need to stop reading (social media) and look for correct information.”

SUPPORTING AFRIDI
Nine years back, Yuvraj Singh was proving to be the biggest throne in the then Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi’s path as both India and Pakistan eyed the 2011 World Cup. It was at Yuvraj’s home ground, Mohali, where India beat Pakistan in the memorable semi-final and three days later, lifted the trophy. Off the field, the players enjoy great camaraderie.

Afridi thanked both, Yuvraj and Harbhajan Singh, and called them a “pillar of support”. The Indian cricketers faced backlash on the social media for supporting a Pakistani icon’s initiative. In times like these, it’s about uniting and battling the challenge together. The deadly virus has infected over 8.6 lakhs globally and killed over 42,000 people. The numbers continue to rise rapidly.
