Varun wins title in Cyprus; Purva runner-up in Kerala

PUNE: It turned out to be a mixed day for Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy (NKBA) players Varun Kapur, who clinched the title at Cyprus and Purva Barve who went down fighting in the final at Kozhikode, on Sunday.

Funded by Kanetkar Sports Foundation (KSF), both Varun and Purva were impressive in their respective outings. Varun Kapur continued his fine form, clinching yet another title when he defeated fifth-seeded Mads Juel Moller from Denmark 21-19, 9-21, 21-19 at the Li Ning Cyprus Junior Open 2019 which concluded at Nicosia, Cyprus.

In the semifinals, Varun beat Denmark player Victor Ording Kaufmann 21-15, 21-15. Speaking after the win, Varun said “It was an enjoyable experience playing in Cyprus. I love coming to Cyprus. This is the third time I have been here and it was as enjoyable as the last time.”

“I would like to thank my coaches for their support. I would also like to thank Kanetkar Sports Foundation (KSF) for funding me and equipment sponsor Li Ning. I am now travelling to Indonesia for the junior grand prix which will take place in Jakarta,” Varun added.

PURVA ENDS RUNNER-UP
Meanwhile in action back home in India at Kozhikode, Purva Barve finished as the runner-up as she went down fighting against 14th seed Malvika Bansod 19-21,21-23.

The semifinal proved to be an action packed one, as unseeded Purva beat top seed Kanika Kanwal 21-19, 15-21, 22-20 to enter the final in style. In the quarterfinals, Purva beat eighth seeded Ira Sharma 11-21, 21-12, 21-13.
