Tara Shah clinches two silvers, Varun Kapur settles for bronze

PUNE: Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy (NKBA) trainees Tara Shah won two silvers while Varun Kapur settled for a bronze medal at the Yonex-Sunrise 33rd Sub Junior (U-15 & U-17) Badminton Championships 2019 which concluded at Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

In the Girls Singles Under-15 finals, second seed Anupama Upadhyaya defeated top seed Tara Shah 21-17, 15-21, 21-11 in a 55 minute match. Earlier in the semifinals, Tara Shah defeated 8th seed Devika Sihag with the score reading 22-20, 21-14.

In the Under-17 finals, top seed Mansi Singh defeated 14th seed Tara Shah 21-11,21-6. In the semifinal battle, Tara Shah defeated 7th seed Taneesha Singh 21-13, 21-19.

Meanwhile in the Boys Singles Under-17 category, eight seed Rithvik Sanjeevi S beat fifth seed Varun Kapur 17-21 21-18 24-22.

Speaking about their performance, coach Nikhil Kanetkar said “Tara and Varun both played to their potential and I am happy with their national performance. Varun was unlucky to lose 22-24 in the 3rd set. Tara did not have enough time to recover from last evening and ended with two silver medals to add to her silver at the Asian Championships last week. I am sure if she keeps working harder she will come out as winner in the years to come.”
