Symbiosis and SPM win U-16 and U-14 titles in high-scoring finals

PUNE: Symbiosis School and SPM School won the Under-16 and Under-14 titles respectively in the St Joseph Invitational Girls basketball tournament in highly engrossing finals that saw some edge of the seat action on Monday.

Yukta Chordia and Anuja Baldota top-scored with 12 and 11 points respectively for Symbiosis School in the Under-16 final against host St. Joseph High Shool, Pashan, after leading 21-14 at the half-time. Symbiosis opened briskly taking 9-5 lead in the first quarter.

As the game wore on, St Joseph made good strides through the efforts of Siya Khilare (9) and Sanika Deshmukh (8) with the fourth quarter being fought closest at 12-11, before Symbiosis eventually sealed it.

Abhinava School won the third-place match-up beating Shamrao Kalmadi High School 14-13.

Tithi shines for SPM
SPM School rode on Tithi Agarwal’s brilliance as she scored in both final and semi-final to steer her team to the Under-14 title.

In the final against GG International School, Tithi scored 13 points, while Aarya Bhate top-scored with 16 as SPM School won 41-37 in a match that elicited much interest given the contest was so closely fought. For GG International School Shruti Mahesh (17) and Diya Hariani (7) were the key scorers.

The Under-14 bronze position was too taken up by Abhinava School beating the same opponents, Shamrao Kalmadi School, in a lop-sided playoff 12-1.

Under-16:
Final: Symbiosis School 36 (Yukta Chordia 12, Anuja Baldota 11) beat St. Joseph High School, Pashan 32 (Siya Khilare 9, Sanika Deshmukh 8). HT: 21-14
Third place: Abhinava English Medium School 14 (Aarya Motghare 7, Mahi Limkar 3) beat Shamrao Kalmadi High School 13(Teesha Shah 8, Shraddha Nargun 4). HT: 3-9
Best players: Shalini Shirole, Sanika Deshmukh

Under-14:
Final: SPM School 41 (Aarya Bhate 16, Tithi Agarwal 13) beat GG International School 37 (Shruti Mahesh 17, Diya Hariani 7). HT: 18-12
Third place: Abhinava English Medium School 12 (Aarya Motghare 8, Saachi Pawar 4) beat Shamrao Kalmadi High School 1 (Shubhra Bapat 1). HT: 10-0
