PUNE: Arantxa Sanchis backed up her Billiards National title with a runners-up position in the snooker championship when she lost a closely-fought battle with Varshaa Sanjeev 41-60, 73-51, 56-34, ,42-70, 16-66, 37-64 in a game that went either way before the Karnataka girl wrapped up the contest.
After Varshaa fluked the pink to go one frame up, Arantxa bounced back to take the next two frames convincingly and was led considerably in the fourth before Varsha found her lines.
While playing safe the cue ball cannoned the blue and stopped in the centre table leaving an open red for Varshaa to pot and make a break to win the frame and make it 2-2. And, as Varshaa took the fifth frame, Arantxa was posed with the challenge of clearing the colours but had a difficult brown which slid off from the pocket and Varshaa was able to clear up to pink and take the frame and the match.
This was Arantxa’s third runners-up finish at Snooker Nationals after having achieved the same results in 2011 and 2017.
