Pune likely to be CSK’s home

Pune likely to be CSK’s home

PUNE: It’s that time of the year when the IPL bandwagon readies for return. Given that the 2019 edition has been advanced to avoid a clash with general elections and will now commence on March 23, there are already talks about where will the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) play their home games.

Citing the Cauvery water dispute and the protests that followed, the CSK management opted to shift their home games to Pune, and the MCA Stadium became happy hunting ground for yellow army’s victorious IPL campaign last year.

THE FINAL CONUNDRUM
Potentially the repercussions of this would be who gets to host the blockbuster IPL final. Not just that it’s a financially lucrative prospect of, it would also be considered as a big honour for a venue as a cricket centre.

As it stands, if CSK set their mind on Pune as their home for IPL 2019, it would automatically be chosen as the venue for the final, being the home of the ‘defending champions’.

A source in MCA confirmed that the talks are ongoing with the CSK management regarding hosting of the matches.

“I can confirm that the talks (to host the CSK matches) are ongoing. We are in advanced stage of talks with the management to make all the arrangements with the requirements of the team. Nothing can be confirmed yet, as we are still in the process,” the official informed.

THE SHORTLIST
The BCCI could short-list four to five cities to host matches, depending on the predicament, but eventually, Pune could be favoured since the Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is familiar with the conditions having played two seasons with Rising Pune Supergiants and last year’s victorious campaign with the Chennai Super Kings.
