Pathange upsets Czech Musil; Adkar through to quarterfinals

PUNE: Arnav Pathange scored an upset win over fifth-seeded Mathias Musil of the Czech Republic and Vaishnavi Adkar knocked out China’s Qianyu Liu  5-7, 6-3, 6-1 to make it to the quarterfinals of the Gadre Marine-MSLTA-ITF Grade 3 Junior Tennis tournament at the Deccan Gymkhana courts here on Wednesday.

Also scoring an upset win was Tomoko Kato of Japan, who swept past second seeded Vipasha Mehra of India in the girls second round singles action.

Vipasha had won the first set 6-4, but Kato rallied brilliantly to take the second into tie-breaker, which she won 7-4 before closing out the decider 6-4. In other girls second round action, Tianmi Mi of China shot out sixth seeded Salakthip Ounmuang of Thailand 6-2, 7-5.

Meanwhile, qualifier Saina Deshpande’s run came to an end when she lost 1-6, 1-6 to the top seeded Russian, Maria Sholokhova.

In the boys section, Arnav Pathange scored an upset win over Mathias Musil 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and in another shock result New Zealand’s Jack Loutit defeated eighth seeded Daisuke Inagawa of Japan, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

In an all-India clash Udit Gogoi led 4-6, 6-4, 3-2 before Sushant Dabas conceded the match, while Aryaan Bhatia drubbed Thailand’s  Taentawan Taddeo Maggioli 6-2 ,6-2 and the No 2 seed, Dev Javia, stopped the fine run of qualifier Aditya Balsekar, winning 6-2, 6-3.
