Nat’l Rowing C’ship sees nailbiting races on 2nd day

PUNE: The 36th National Rowing Championship continued with some nailbiting single and double sculls repechages races, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals on Thursday. The events were men’s single scull, women’s single scull, men’s coxless pair, women’s coxless pair and men’s and women’s coxless four.      

After Wednesday’s high winds, a still morning greeted competitors at the championship, being held at the College of Military Engineering (CME), Dapodi. On Thursday, the conditions were perfect for racing, with flat water, light winds and slightly cooler temperature. The grandstand was full of spectators from schools and colleges. 

In Men’s Single Scull quarterfinals, Hav Bokanal Datu (Ex-Olympian) of Army Sports Control Board finished the 2,000 m race in 07:36:82, about 52 seconds ahead of a Punjab rower and qualified to the semifinals.

In Light Men Double Scull event, with three boats within 10 seconds of each other, it was a close race with Sub Sonu Singh and Nb Sub Vikram Singh of Army Sports Control Board unleashing a powerful sprint to win the place in the finals, along with the team of Haryana Rowing Association.

In Women’s Double Scull, the teams from Orissa and Chandigarh Rowing Association qualified for finals, whereas in Women’s Coxless pair, teams from Madhya Pradesh and Telangana Rowing Association qualified for finals.

Sub Swaran Singh (Ex-Olympian) of Services Sports Control Board scored a narrow win in Men’s Single Scull quarterfinals and is through to Semifinals. The competition continues on Friday with final races of 2,000 m, followed by the medal presentation.
