Mitika Gunele ensures at least bronze medal for Maharashtra

Pune: Nations Cup gold medallist Mitika Gunele ensured at least a bronze medal for herself when she walloped Haryana Anu Rani 4-1 to storm into the semifinals from women’s Under-17 welterweight category at the Khelo India Youth Games boxing competition at the Balewadi Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

Mitika, who has participated in international competitions in Ukraine, Serbia, Poland and Kazakhstan, controlled the bout from the start not allowing Rani to take any advantage.

The Mumbai girl who practices at SAI Centre in Kandivali with coach Pratibha Jakhar, said she has her eyes on winning the gold medal here.

“The experience of competing in the international competition has surely helped me and I was never under pressure,” said Mitika who hopes to impress upon the spotters and get picked up for the national camp.

Haryana’s Raj Sahiba, a Khelo India and the Nations Cup gold medalist in 2018 defeated Haryana’s Divya after referee stopped the bout in the second round.

In the same category, Babyrojisana Chanu, a student of Mary Kom, booked her place in the last four. Chanu is gold medalist of Junior Asian Championship and 7th Nations Cup held last year.

Among under-17 boys, Pune’s Akash Gorkha confirmed his medal by entering into last-four in the featherweight category thanks to a vocal crowd from Boys Sports Company present at the venue to cheer him. Aakash rained in punches taking advantage of his lanky and lean body to script an easy victory.
