Maharashtra in a strong position against Vidarbha

PUNE: Riding on some inspired bowling display, home team Maharashtra spectacularly turned things around against Vidarbha on Day 2 of their Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match here at the MCA Stadium on Friday.

Vidarbha have their work cut out, who are behind by 177 runs after being forced to follow on on Day 2. Maharashtra moved from an overnight 284/6 to 343 with Rahul Tripathi’s 73 a vital injection before the last three wickets fell in the span of ten runs.

TRIPATHI SHINES
Starting the 2nd day on 264 for 6, Tripathi’s 71-ball 73 was the stand-out batting performance on Day 2, on what was otherwise a bowlers’ day with as many as 11 wickets going down.

Starting the day on 36, Tripathi went on to bring up a brisk half-century as his knock ensured that Maharashtra finished with close to 350. The Maharashtra bowlers then came to the party to bowl the visitors out for 120, who were later asked to follow on.

Satyajeet Bachhav’s left-arm spin hurt the lower order after Anupam Sanklecha, Samad Fallah and Nikit Dumal took two each. Wasim Jaffer (27) and Aditya Sarvate (25) were the only batsmen to cross 13 in a sorry innings. Following on, Vidarbha ended the 2nd day on 46 for 0.

Brief scores: Maharashtra 343 vs Vidarbha 120 ( Wasim Jaffer 27, Sarwate 25, Bachhav 3/3, Samad Fallah 2/21) and 46 for 0 in 17 overs ( Ramaswamy 25*, Faiz Faizal 20*) Vidarbha trail 177 runs.

PATIDAR THWARTS TAMIL NADU
Rajat Patidar missed out on a well-deserved double century by four runs, but helped Madhya Pradesh make 393 against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match.

India spinner R Ashwin and fast bowler M Mohammed finished with four wickets each to help Tamil Nadu restrict Madhya Pradesh from posting a huge total.

The home team was zero for no loss in two overs at stumps on day two. Resuming at the overnight score of 214 for 3, Patidar forged another useful partnership with Shubham Sharma (43) to put the team in a strong position.

However, things went awry after the exit of Sharma as they slid from 317 for 4 to 393 all out. Shubham Sharma was snapped up by wicketkeeper N Jagadeesan off Rahil Shah’s bowling following which Patidar and Yash Dubey (6) added 42 runs.

Patidar defied the Tamil Nadu bowlers like he did on Thursday. He slammed 17 fours and a six in his 406-ball knock. He fell caught behind off Mohammed’s bowling.
