Maha Cricket Assn set to hold fresh elections

PUNE: The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), which was a ‘defaulting state unit’ till now is fully compliant with the Lodha Committee, Riyaz Bagwan the lone committee member informed on Monday.

As a result, being fully in compliance with the constitutional amendments, the MCA is free to hold fresh elections and have a new set of office-bearers according to the CoA directorate.

Bagwan told Sakal Times on the phone that a Special General Meeting (SGM) to call elections has been drafted for September 1.

Bagwan, the de facto head of the Association is the only elected member of the MCA– (elected as secretary in 2017).

The Committee of Administrators (COA) running Indian cricket had asked MCA to correct “inaccuracies” in its constitution.

Last year, the Supreme Court told Maharashtra Cricket Association to postpone elections citing the same.

Bagwan confirmed the development to Sakal Times.

“ Yes, we (the MCA) have got a mail from the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) confirming that the Maharashtra Cricket Association now complies fully with the recommendations of the Lodha Committee and complies its constitution based on the recommendations,” Bagwan said on Monday.

NEW ELECTIONS
He further informed that the agenda for the Special General Meeting (SGM) on September 1, would now be to call for fresh elections and elect a new set of Board Members adhering to the Lodha Panel
recommendations.

The Committee of Administrators (COA) in 2018, had pointed out clauses in the flawed constitution two of which are (1) composition of the Managing Committee appears to have been formulated with a view to perpetuating vested interests that have been entrenched in the MCA and (2) sidelining former international players hailing from the State.

It remains to be seen what role Bagwan plays in the developments over the next fortnight.
