Loyola HS raises bar as it unveils international standard pitch

PUNE: Loyola High School added a fresh chapter to its vast history and in the process redefined its sport ideology for the GenNext by inaugurating a FIFA-standard natural grass football pitch on Thursday.

Having seeded the thought in February 2019 the project breathed life through the determined Ex-Loyola Alumni Network (ELAN), headed by President Manoj Walvekar, and includes pass out batches from 1962 onwards to result in a state-of-art playing surface.

Backed by former-principal Fr. Nelton Thomas and powered by industrialist Atul Kirloskar, Chairman of an eight-man Loyola Sport Vision (LSV) committee the four-inch sand-based pitch, backed with an auto pop up irrigation system and a slit-drain drainage system, is a first-of-its-kind at any school in the city.

“it’s a dream to give back to the kids of today. The overall idea was to give the best of facilities and opportunities to help students excel in the field of sports,” said Kirloskar,

The idea of having a sand-based pitch ahead of an artificial pitch was primarily to be in sync with word practices that include having a good drainage system and importantly softness to the ground. As a school it remained pertinent to give the kids a surface that is playable all year round and reduce injury risk in their formative years.

Fr. Anish, Principal Loyola said: “the effort taken by our alumni was purely based on a common ‘give back time’ by one and all which is commendable. Loyola is one of the few schools in India where the alumni come forward for such a big project.”
