Jia-Jing in lead role; Karman is best Indian bet in the $25,000 NECC-ITF Women’s Tennis Tournament

Pune: China’s and world No. 207 Jia-Jing Lu will be the top-seed in the $25,000 NECC-ITF Women’s Tennis Tournament to be played at Deccan Gymkhana here from December 11 to 16. Jia was the champion of tournament in 2008.

Based on the acceptance list, Georgina Garcia-Perez (Spain), world rank No. 250, is expected to be second seed among the 20 direct entries (based on rankings) in the main draw.

Great Briton’s Katy Dunne (No. 276) and Ganna Poznikhirenko (Ukraine, No. 278) make up the Top-4 seeds.

India’s Karman Kaur Thandi and Ankita Raina, who made the tournament memorable by bagging her maiden ITF title in 2014, is the only direct entry in the main draw. Karman Ranked No, 284 in the world and Ankita ranked 293.

The two-day qualifying rounds (December 9 and 10) will have eight players move into the main draw. Apart from the direct entries (20), the qualifiers (8), four wild-cards will make up the final draw and expects a host of Indians to come through.

“This is the 17th consecutive year of this tournament, with National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) being the sponsors on every single occasion.

“The support of NECC has been our backbone. We thank NECC for sponsoring this tournament for last 16 years. Thank you Mr. BSR Shastri,” Sudhir Ranade, the Tournament Director said.

“The facilities provided by the Deccan Gymkhana to the players participated in this tournament, is also one of the reasons that make this tournament very favorite among all the players,” said Sudhir Ranade, Tennis Secretary, Deccan Gymkhana.

“We also would like to thank All India Tennis Association (AITA) and the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) for their guidance. We thank Mr. Sunder Iyer, Hon. Secretary of MSLTA for his support,” said Ranade.

ITF has designated Mrs. Sheetal Iyer, a Gold badge referee, as the supervisor for this tournament.
