Jalgaon District wins 116th Aga Khan Cup

PUNE: Akbar Khan scored twice, once in regulation time and once in the tie-breaker as Jalgaon beat Nashik Range Police 5-4 in tie-breaker after the two teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time in the 116th All-India Aga Khan Cup Hockey tournament at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sports Stadium in Jalgaon on Saturday.

The tournament this year was moved out of Pune due to operational difficulties and held in Jalgaon for the first time saw teams from Jalgaon win titles in four other categories. Priyanka Tayade and Ashwini Jadhav scored for Jalgaon in the women’s final against Dhule, which the hosts won 2-0.

In the age group categories, both boy’s titles went to Jalgaon, as also the girls Under-19 trophy that was won by Hockey Association Jalgaon. In the Under-17 girls final, however, North Point School, Dhule, triumphed over Godavari School, Jalgaon 2-1 to break the monopoly of the hosting association.

AKBAR STRIKES TWO
Akbar Khan of Jalgaon was the most prolific on the ground scoring in the regulation time against Nashik Range Police. SK Shakir was the other scorer, while Sayyed Shadab and Krushna Yadav scored for the police team as the two teams ended regulation time tied at 2-2.

The penalty shootout saw Akbar Khan scoring the fifth try after Jalgaon had scored on all four earlier tries too. For the police team Krushna Yadav, Mangesh Jadhav, Shadab Sayyed and Rohit Kedar scored to keep up with the host, but Akram Shaikh, who took the fifth try, missed the target.

Men: Jalgaon 2 (Akbar Khan, SK Shakir) beat Nashik Range Police 2 (Sayyed Shadab, Krushna Yadav). Tie-break: 5 (Aves Khan, Shoeb Khan, Tabish Khan, Nadeem Pathan, Akbar Khan)-4 (Krushna Yadav, Mangesh Jadhav, Shadab Sayeed, Rohit Kedar).
Under-19: Godavari Foundation Hockey Team, Jalgaon beat BZ Urdu School, Bhusawal 3-2.
Under-17: Imperial High School, Jalgaon beat Dhule District 2-0.
Women: Jalgaon 2 (Priyanka Tayade, Ashwini Jadhav) beat Dhule 0.
Under-19: Hockey Association Jalgaon beat Dhule Gramin 2-1.
Under-17: North Point School, Dhule beat Godavari School, Jalgaon 2-1.
Best players: Zuber Khan (Jalgaon), Raju Sodse (Nashik).
Best upcoming player: Rehan Khan.
