IPL 2020: BCCI awaits government approval to stage tournament in UAE from September 26

With the ICC T20 World Cup has now been officially postponed, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is seeking a nod from the Indian government to conduct Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 26, 2020. The BCCI is looking forward for the government's approval to finalise its plan for Season 13 of the much-awaited League.

"Hopefully, in next couple of weeks (BCCI) will seek clearances from the government for the tournament (IPL) to be played in the UAE," former Indian cricketer and the IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel told India Today.

"The UAE government offered us to host the IPL in their country and we are very much aware of the facilities and situation there. The IPL (first leg) was played there (UAE) in 2014 so we know what we are looking at," he added.

A meeting by the IPL governing council is scheduled in a week to deliberate and finalise the plan for the upcoming T20 League. "Within a week the IPL governing council meeting will be held where the next plan of action is to be discussed," said another BCCI official who is also associated with the IPL Governing Council.

Indian players would have training for few weeks in a national camp at Motera Stadium, Ahmedabad before season 13 of the IPL kick-starts. The BCCI Apex Council had come up with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru as a venue for the camp, but it was rejected due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Karnataka.

Apart from BCCI, several IPL franchises are also examining the possibility of setting up camps for their respective players before the League.

Currently, IPL is set to start from September 26 and is likely to conduct the final on November 7 or 8. The possibility of extension of IPL 2020 till the Diwali weekend (November 14) would also be deliberated in the IPL Governing Council meeting, as the broadcaster (Star Network) is eager to see IPL wrap up on that day to generate revenue that was lost due to COVID-19.
