ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Virat Kohli fit for South Africa match
Indian skipper was hit on the thumb on Saturday
London: In a big relief to Team India, captain Virat Kohli has been declared fit ahead of India’s World Cup opener against South Africa on June 5.
Earlier on Saturday, in a major ‘heart in mouth’ moment, Kohli injured his thumb during a practice session, sending the team management almost in panic mode. Team physiotherapist Patrick Farhat to attend to the Indian skipper and magic spray was applied to the thumb following which it was taped.
India have had their fair share of injury concerns prior to the World Cup. Vijay Shankar missed India’s first warm-up game against New Zealand after hurting his elbow during a training session.
And all-rounder Kedar Jadhav is yet to recover from the shoulder injury he picked up during the latter stages of the Indian Premier League. Jadhav did not take any part in both the warm-up matches.
BCCI says nothing serious
A source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news on India’s premier batsman and mentioned that there’s no point of concern by any means. Kohli even practised in the nets and completed his training session, much to the team management’s relief.
India, meanwhile, will face South Africa at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday, before they face fellow tournament favourites Australia in their second match on June 9 at the Oval.
It goes without saying that Kohli needs to fire on all cylinders if India is to go on and win the World Cup.
Kohli and Co hit gym
Team India is leaving no stone unturned ahead of their World Cup opener against South Africa. The team arrived way in advance in Southampton to acclimatise with the notorious British weather. Since then they’ve been preparing for the high-octane clash and on Sunday, the Indian skipper shared a picture with the team post the gym session.
Reserves to fly home
Indian Cricket Team management have decided to send back few of the net bowlers home ahead of their ICC World Cup 2019 opener against South Africa on June 5. The selectors had decided to send four extra bowlers to England to assist the batters in the nets.
The selectors picked four pacers from the IPL - Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan, and Deepak Chahar to travel with the India team. The crop of young cricketers have impressed significantly in the recently concluded IPL. Khaleel, Avesh, and Chahar have already travelled in England and practising with the team.
Preferring an early touchdown in Southampton, Team India have quite a lot of time to get into the grooves. As a result, members of the national side had a fun session of paintball ahead of their opening clash in the showpiece event. India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah shared the picture from his official Twitter handle wherein the likes of skipper Kohli, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, etc are seen posing after the paintball session.
