Haryana, Punjab, Odisha and Jharkhand set up equivalent semis line-up

Pune: Hockey powerhouse Haryana and Punjab stormed into the Women’s Under-21 semi-finals in contrasting fashion on Wednesday as Haryana thrashed Chandigarh 8-0, while Punjab played out 2-2 draw with Uttar Pradesh in their last league matches to finish as top two teams in Pool B, in the Khelo India Youth Games at the NDA Stadium here on Wednesday.

From Pool A Jharkhand and Odisha qualified for the semifinals, which will be played on Friday.

In the first match of the day, Haryana rode on Jyoti’s three goals, a brace from Amandeep Kaur, while Navneet Kaur and Manisha chipped in with one apiece in their 8-0 thrashing of hapless Chandigarh.

The other Pool B match saw Punjab surrender their 2-0 lead against Uttar Pradesh before holding on to a 2-2 draw. Gurleen Gerwal put Punjab ahead in the 5th minute of the game before Gurkamal Kaur made it 2-0.

Uttar Pradesh rallied gamely by reducing the margin through captain Mumtaz Khan’s 35th minute strike before Sonal Tiwari (58th) struck late to draw parity.

Earlier on Tuesday, it was Jharkhand and Odisha who secured the top two places in Pool A respectively to progress to the Semi-Finals. Jharkhand finished with a tally of five points from their three matches while Odisha finished with three points.

Punjab 2 (Gurleen Gerwal 5th, Gurkamal Kaur 26th) drew with Uttar Pradesh 2 (Mumtaz Khan 35th, Sonal Tiwari 58th).
Semifinal line-up: January 18: Jharkhand v Odisha (2 pm); Haryana v Punjab (4 pm).
