Darren Sammy alleges racist abuse in IPL

Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy has alleged to have been subjected to racial comment during the Indian Premier League ( IPL) while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Sammy took to his Instagram story to reveal on the racial comment that he and Sri Lanka's Thisara Perera was receiving during the play.

“I just learnt what that ‘Kalu’ meant when I played for Sunrisers in the IPL. They call me and Perera by that name. I thought it meant strong Stallion. My previous post tells me something different and I’m angry,” Sammy posted on his Instagram story on Saturday.

He did not reveal who made this remark.

His previous post stated, “Oh so that’s what that meant when they called me and @tp_perera Kalu in India when we played for Sunrisers. I just thought they were calling me strong black man… I’m more piss (sic) now.”

This statement was a reaction to an episode of the show "The Patriot Act" hosted by Indian American comedian Hasan Minhaj which spoke about racism in Indian households.

Sammy has taken to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other cricket boards to speak out on the matter as "this happens every day." He urges them to speak out "against social injustice against any kind."

Sammy’s follow-up tweet on June 2 said, “For too long black people have suffered. I’m all the way in St Lucia and I’m frustrated If you see me as a teammate then you see #GeorgeFloyd Can you be part of the change by showing your support. #BlackLivesMatter”.

This allegations came after his support to the #BlackLivesMatter campaign. He expresses himself at a time when the world is mourning the death of George Floyd – an African-American, 46-year-old, who died in Minneapolis on May 25 after Derek Chauvin, a white policeman, knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

Earlier, his team-mate, opening batsman Chris Gayle also condoled Floyd's demise and said he too was a victim of racism.

"I have travelled the globe and experience racial remarks towards me because I am black, believe me, the list goes on,” Gayle wrote in his Instagram story.
