Chennai beat Mumbai by five wickets: Big sixes, wonderful catches and a classic MS Dhoni

Mumbai Indians extended their record of losing their first game of the season as the Super Kings chased down the target of 163, with 4 balls to spare and 5 wickets in hand.

When Chennai Super Kings lost their fourth wicket with 29 to get in 17 balls, one would have thought it was time for Dhoni to walk out and treat the word with a typical MS Dhoni finish. But he had something else in mind. All-rounder Sam Curran (18 of 6), in the squad because DJ Bravo has a niggle, walked in all guns blazing, hitting Krunal for a four and six. He then hit Bumrah for another six before falling. But by then, he had cut the deficit down to 10 of 10 balls. Du

And then walked out Dhoni, the moment the cricketing world had awaited. But it all seemed lost when he was given out caught behind on the first ball he faced, only for the decision to be reversed after a quick review by the CSK skipper. This is 100th IPL win for Mahi as a captain.

Put in to bat after losing the toss, MI could only manage 162 on the board in spite of a good start. Saurabh Tiwary (42 of 31) and Quinton de Kock (33 of 20) made handy contributions in an innings that faltered towards the end. MI could only manage 35 runs in the last 5 overs, losing 4 wickets.

Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers as he picked 3 wickets, albeit being a little costly and conceding 38 runs. While Deepak Chahar and Ravindra Jadeja got 2 wickets each, Sam curran and Piyush Chawla managed to get one MI batsmen each.

Ambati Rayudu (71 of 48) and Faf du Plessis (48 of 44) were the pick of the batsmen for CSK as they put together a stand of 115 for the third wicket. CSK were in a spot of worry when the two batsmen, having lost both Murali Vijay and Shane Watson for a team score of 6.

Each of the Mumbai Indians bowlers got a wicket each.

Sam Curran was adjudged the man of the match for his all-round contribution.

CSK now move onto Sharjah where they will face the Rajasthan Royals on September 22 while Mumbai Indians will face Kolkata Knight Riders at the same venue on September 23.
