Aryan, Arjun gets wild card for KPIT Challenger

Pune: Maharashtra players Aryan Goveas and Arjun Kadhe along with Saketh Myneni and N Sriram Balaji have been awarded singles wild card entry into the $50,000 Pune Open which starts at MSLTA School of Tennis in Balewadi Sports Complex on Saturday.

The main draw of the tournament will start from Monday where likes of India’s top singles players Yuki Bhambri, ranked 140, and Ramkumar Ramanathan (148) will lead country’s challenge at the first Challenger event of the season at home.

Last year’s runner-up Prajensh Gunneswaran is also in the main draw.
World number 98 Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia and Radu Albot, ranked 86 from Moldova, form part of a decent field.

“We wanted to give the opportunity to upcoming Maharashtra players like Goveas and Kadhe to showcase their skills,” said Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) Secretary Sunder Iyer.

“We expect at least 8-10 players from India to make it to ATP draws in the main and qualifying draw, which in turn will provide them an opportunity to compete at a world-class level,” Iyer added.

Wild Card for qualifiers
Jayesh Pungalia, Dhruv Sunish, Siddhant Banthia from Maharashtra and Suraj Prabodh of Karnataka have got wild cards for qualifying round.
“The event has really helped Indian Players and especially State players as it provides them with a platform to move further in rankings,” said Bharat Oza, MSLTA President.
