Pune: The death of a 22-year-old youth, who died in custody in Swargate police station on Thursday afternoon, has led the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a probe in the case.
The deceased, Ajith Kallappa Poojary of Bhadravati, was in the city to meet his sister. He was taken into custody by Swargate police on suspicion of being involved in a mobile theft case.
Following the death, the community members of the deceased alleged that Ajith died due to police torture.
However, the police said that Ajith was suffering from chest pain and was taken to Sassoon General Hospital but could not be saved. Police officials suspect that Ajith died due to heart attack and were waiting for his autopsy report.
Officials of the Criminal Investigation Department said that they have already initiated an inquiry in the case.
