Youngsters, sr citizens are saying ‘no’ to firecrackers

Pune: Change in the society does take place but gradually. And the change is visible with a number of youngsters saying ‘No’ to bursting firecrackers this Diwali. These youngsters have joined hands with senior citizens for eco-friendly Diwali.

Instead of burning crackers, they are preferring to invest in adventure sports or doing social activities. Senior citizens always suffer from air pollution during and after Diwali festivities and that is the reason they always get annoyed by it.

Former retired Army official Krishna Devkar said, “We respect the Supreme Court’s (SC) judgement, but it should be taken in an elaborative way and not in a hurry. The firecrackers should be totally banned not only during Diwali but also during other festivals and celebrations. Also, the SC should have taken the decision of bursting green crackers few months prior to Diwali, because green crackers are not available in bulk and also they are meant for the north Indian states only.”

A senior citizen from Wagholi, Milind Joshi said, “Diwali is the festival of lights and not firecrackers, so there is no need of firecrackers at all. Instead, the government should focus on educating youngsters and making people aware of the ill-effects of bursting firecrackers. So basically, there should be a total ban on firecrackers.”

A senior citizen from Walhekarwadi, Ravindra Shinde said, “Every year, most of the senior citizens suffer from respiratory diseases due to smoke of firecrackers. And we are not at all taken into consideration while any decision is made. And that is the reason we are always against the firecrackers.”

MBA student Aniket Nangre, said, “We have been taught in school that Diwali festival is the festival of light and not firecrackers and looking at the current environmental issues, I, along with my friends, have stopped purchasing and bursting firecrackers for last three years. Instead, we invest the same money in adventure sports and helping NGOs and poor people.”

A student of mass communication Amala Reddie said, “Firecrackers should be completely banned as it causes problems not only to humans but also to birds and animals. I have two stray cats as pets and I also have hearing issues, so I never burst crackers nor do I like when someone bursting it. It irritates me and annoys me to a great extent. It is possible to have noiseless Diwali, then why not implement it?”

Diya Singh, a student of Std X, said, “When I learned about the environment issue, I decided not to burst crackers and will spread awareness about it everywhere.”
