Yerwada prisoners to operate salon, cloth ironing shop

PUNE: To rehabilitate and bring prisoners into the mainstream, Yerwada jail authorities on Saturday opened three shops, including a salon, which will be operated by prisoners. Five to six inmates will be given work at the shops.

The prison administration is rehabilitating prisoners who have displayed good behaviour. The purpose is to engage the prisoners and give them the opportunity to improve while serving their sentence.

DIG of Prison (Western region) Yogesh Desai said that the skills and training imparted to the prisoners will help them when they go out of the prison after completing their sentences.

“We try to first change the mindset of the prisoner and then rehabilitate. The prisoners from open jail are allowed to work in various shops, farms and workshops. These skills will help them in leading life with dignity once they become part of the society again,” said Desai after inaugurating the salon and cloth ironing shop on Saturday.

Yerwada Jail Superintendent UT Pawar, Additional Superintendent Rani Bhosale, Deputy Superintendent Chandramani Indurkar and Public Works Department Engineer Rajiv Teli were also present.

There is also a showroom near the prison where various items made by the prisoners are kept for sale. These include bakery to homemade products such as furniture, bed linen, carpets, bags, lamps, clothing, shoes, etc. The inmates are already operating a washing centre.
