A year on, PMC struggles to obtain Guinness certificate

Pune: Even after one year of attempting to make Guinness World Record by making the maximum number of ‘shadu maati’ (clay) Ganesh idols at one place and at one time, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is still struggling to obtain the certificate from Guinness World Record agency. According to the sources, the corporation-appointed consultant is currently clarifying 14 queries raised by the agency. Last year, the ruling BJP had attempted a world record on the occasion of 125th year of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav.

On August 24, 2017, the PMC had conducted a workshop of making 3,082 eco-friendly Ganesh idols. It was the initiative undertaken by Mayor Mukta Tilak.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) appointed a consultant to coordinate with Guinness World Record agency named ‘Bharatiyan’ which is being run by Milind Verlekar.

The corporation had given responsibility to the School Board Sports Officer Rajendra Dhumane to document all the details of this event including the name of the school, students’ name, number of idols etc. The corporation paid consultant Rs 5 lakh fee for making necessary correspondence and submission of documents to the Guinness World Record agency.

While attempting this record, the training was given to students from PMC as well as private schools before participating in this event. The actual event was organised on Baburao Sanas ground, near Sarasbaug. Besides this, the corporation had also announced another world record event to play 5,000 Dhol Tasha at one time, however, it was later cancelled due to challenges faced while assembling Dhol Tasha troops. For both the events, PMC had allotted Rs 2 crore.

While speaking to Sakal Times, Verlekar said, “We have not received certificate yet. We are working on that. World record agency has raised 14 queries about this record. We have sorted out 8 major queries and we are working on the remaining ones which will be sorted out soon. We have adhered to 150 norms as per the requirements of the record. Conclusive evidence has been submitted. So, we will definitely get a certificate of world record. The time frame of issuing certificate depends on the number of days taken to clear queries based on different norms.”
