PUNE: A 19-year-old youth from West Bengal was arrested from Chakan for allegedly being linked to two suspected Bangladeshi terrorists arrested in Patna, a few days ago.
The arrested accused has been identified as Shariyat Anwarulhaq Mandal. He claims to be a resident of Bajipur, Panchayat Gajna, in Nadiya district of West Bengal. Mandal worked as a construction labourer.
In a press release, Bihar ATS stated, “Based on leads from earlier arrested accused, Shariyat Mandal was caught in Chakan on Wednesday with help of Maharashtra ATS. Two mobile phones and a micro SD card has been seized from his possesion. He is being brought to Patna by a special team. Mandal is a member of (terrorist org) Islamic State of Bangladesh, who was involved in setting up ISIS in India.”
After getting information from Bihar Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), officials from the Pune unit of Maharashtra ATS detained him. On Monday, officials from Bihar ATS arrived here and arrested the accused. He was produced before a Pune special court which granted his transit remand to be taken to Bihar.
According to ATS officials, on Monday, Bihar ATS had arrested Khairul Mandal and Abu Sultan, both from Bangladesh. Both of the arrested are suspected to be members of the banned terrorist organisation Jamat ul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB) and Islamic State Of Bangladesh (ISBD).
ATS had seized photocopies of letters related to deployment of central armed police forces in Jammu and Kashmir after the Pulwama attack besides fake voter identity cards, PAN cards, and ISIS posters from them. The duo had travelled to several parts of the country and tried to recruit youths and set up sleeper cells. After getting a tip-off from Intelligence Bureau (IB), Bihar ATS arrested them near Patna railway station on Monday morning.
During interrogation, it was found that Shariyat was in contact with them and hence he was arrested too for further investigation.
The JMB is said to be involved in the bomb blast at Bodh Gaya on January 19, 2018, when Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama was present in the town. A couple of crude bombs and large quantity of explosives were also recovered from the place.
