Water levels in four dams cross last year’s mark

PUNE: While the Meteorological department announcing that 2019’s monsoon being the slowest progressing monsoon in the last twelve years, rain has not failed to bring some cheer for Puneites. According to officials from Water resource Departmen,t if rain continues, Khadakwasla dam may fill up to its full capacity on Tuesday. Last year, water was released from Khadakwasla dam for the first time on 12th July. 

The total water level of all four dams supplying water to the city has crossed last year’s water level on recorded on the same day. The water level is now 8.07 TMC or 27.70 per cent on Monday evening. Last year, the water level was 7.80 TMC, or 26.77 per cent. 

The storage of the four dams - Khadakwasala, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar on Sunday was 6.25 TMC (21.44 per cent). In last 24 hours ended on Monday evening, Temghar dam received 100 mm rainfall, while Varasgaon and Panshet received 98 mm and 85 mm rainfall respectively. 

Khadakwasala received 42 mm rainfall in last 24 hours ended on Monday evening. 

According to the Irrigation Department, the catchment area of the four dams received 325 mm rainfall on Monday, with Temghar dam catchment area recording 100 mm of rainfall, followed by Varasgaon (98mm) and Panshet (85 mm). However, the catchment area of Khadakwasala received 42 mm rainfall, which is 33 mm more than rainfall recorded on Sunday (9mm). 

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) draws about 1.4 TMC water every month and about 16 TMC in a year. Considering the water stock in the four dams, it will be sufficient to fulfil city’s needs for next six months.
