Water level in Pavana dam crosses 90 pc

Pimpri: Due to constant rainfall in catchment areas of Pavana dam, the water level in the dam crossed 90 per cent on Monday. On an average, Pavana dam fills with 100 per cent capacity around August 15. This year, Pavana dam is expected to fill to capacity earlier.

The Irrigation Department started releasing 1300 cusecs water for a hydro power project on the dam from Monday morning. If water would not have been released, the dam would have been filled to capacity in a couple of days, but the irrigation Department started releasing water as a precautionary measure. Water discharge will be increased in coming days if the rains in catchment area continue.

Despite the water being released, water level in the dam is steadily increasing as the inflow of the water is more than what is being released in the river. The catchment area of Pavana dam received 36 mm rainfall on Monday. Till Monday morning, 83 mm rainfall has been recorded in the catchment area. So far since June 1, the catchment area of the dam has received 2,039 mm rain.

Pavana dam had total water storage of 1.93 TMC ft (22.71 per cent) on June 15 this year. On the same day last year, there was 0.99  TMC ft (11.69 per cent) water in the dam.

Deputy Engineer of Irrigation Department VN Mathkari said, “Due to good rains in the catchment area, the water level in the dam is increasing steadily. Currently, water has been released for the power generation plant at the rate of 1300 cusecs in Pavana river. If the rain continues like this, the water discharge will be increased.”
