Wagholi residents to use bicycle sharing system

PUNE: Starting with an environment-friendly new year, the Wagholi Housing Society Association has started with a green initiative by launching a bicycle sharing system for Wagholi area on their own.

Sanjeevkumar Patil, Director of Wagholi Housing Society Association, said, “As a new year resolution, we thought of launching a bicycle sharing system in Wagholi as a green initiative. The bicycles are made available by Yulu Bikes Pvt Ltd. We have been noticing since a year that the residents of Pune city have got a bicycle sharing system, but it was not available in Wagholi. So we thought of starting with our own.”

“It has been a week since the bicycle sharing system has started. Ten cycles are provided to five societies of Wagholi area, including Suyog Nisarg at Lohegaon Road, Solacia Phase 2, Sai Shrusti and Green Grooves at Baif Road and Ivy Estate on Nagar Road. Since the system has started from last week, the usage of the cycles has reached around 500 to 600,” Patil added.

Patil even shared that they have approached the Gram Panchayat and the local body will be helping them to mark places for the station of bicycles.

Ramakrishna Satav Patil, an officer of the Wagholi Gram Panchayat, said, “There are around 140 housing societies in Wagholi, five to seven colleges and four to five schools along with IT companies, commercials and eateries. The population of Wagholi has been increasing day and day and so does the pollution. This cycle sharing system will be helpful for the residents and people to commute locally with minimum fare and will help the environment as well.”

“Now, we have started marking space on streets for the parking for bicycles. Three places have been finalised including Wadeshwar Mandir, Shivaji Chowk and Bakudi Road in Wagholi area. More places are to be mappedm” Satav Patil added.
