Unlock 1.0: Demand for reopening theatres, resuming commercial plays

Pune: With relaxations being given to many sectors in Lockdown 5.0, the theatre community has demanded that they should be allowed to host commercial plays in theatres with all necessary precautions and standard operating procedures (SOP) in place.

In a video-conferencing meet on Friday with Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad, Member of Parliament Supriya Sule, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Chetan Tupe, Actor Prashant Damle, Subodh Bhave, Producer Shripad Padmakar and others, it was decided to submit a proposal to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar for re-starting theatres in Pune city.

All theatres are closed for 2.5 months due to the lockdown imposed by the government. Just like other sectors, the theatre industry has been badly affected due to the lockdown. Many influential theatre personalities have come together to get the industry out of this situation and resume normal shows of commercial plays.

Nobody knows as of now, whether people will come to watch a play in the theatre. But we need to make efforts to normalize the situation and plan accordingly. Everybody's participation is needed in this effort. During the meeting, MP Sule and MLA Tupe showed readiness to organize plays in theatre in the respective constituencies.

Also demands like waiving off toll for theatre company vehicles, reducing rental charges of theatres and advertisement rates of newspapers were made during the meeting. It was also assured that theatre actors would charge less, but other employees would not face any pay cuts.

"The meeting was very positive and many issues were discussed in it. We will soon prepare and submit a proposal regarding this issue," said Shripad Padmakar while speaking to media persons.
