University Grants Commission will name chairs after prominent women

PUNE: Ten new chairs named after eminent women academicians, administrators, artistes, scientist, environmentalists and social reformers will be introduced at different universities in the country. 

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has stated that these chairs will be funded by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. 

UGC in a notification has called for invites from universities which are willing to set up the chairs by the end of December.

The names include Lilavati in Mathematics, Lal Ded (Lalleshwari) in poetry and mysticism, Amrita Devi (Beniwal) for forest/wildlife conservation, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar for administration, Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi in Medicine and Health, Hansa Mehta for educational reform, Mahadevi Verma for literature, Kamala Sohonie in Science, Rani Gaidinliu for freedom fighter (North-East) and Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshami for music and performing arts.

UGC has stated that the academic functions of these chairs will be to engage in research and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the area of the study.
 
To strengthen the role of university/academics in public policymaking, it will design and execute short-term capacity building programmes for teachers in higher education towards the designated discipline of the chair. 

The universities are directed to publish an article, research paper, reports and books or monograms under respective chairs among other functions of it.
