Two DEMU rakes reach Pune yard

Pune: After Pune-Daund service which commenced earlier this year, another Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) service is in the offing as two more rakes of 10 coaches each arrived at Pune yard on Saturday from Integral Coach Factory, Chennai.

The Pune-Daund service. though it came after a long wait, didn't turn out to be a hit as expected as passengers demanded return to conventional rake within a month of commencement of DEMU service. Last month, Central Railway even agreed to ply the conventional rake instead of DEMU rake during rush hours.

A senior official said two DEMU rakes with 10 coaches each were received from the factory in Chennai but it is not clear on what route they would be used.

Harsha Shah of Railway Pravasi Group said considering the demands and infrastructure, the new DEMU service can be started on Pune-Kurduwadi, Pune-Daund-Nagar, Kolhapur-Miraj-Karad-Satara or Pune-Lonand-Phaltan routes.

“Given the demand we would need at least six to eight such rakes,” said Shah.
