Two dead bodies swapped at Sassoon General hosp mortuary

PUNE: In a shocking incident, two bodies were swapped from the mortuary of the Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) in the city.

The incident came to light after the family of the deceased Mandakini Dhiwar noticed that the body given to them was not hers.

According to SGH officials, the two bodies, Mandakini Dhiwar (62) and Vimal Parkhe (70) were brought to SGH mortuary for storage. Officials said that both the bodies were not medico legal cases and hence, no post-mortem was done.

“Vimal Parkhe’s son Uttam Parkhe came to SGH morgue at 8:30 am and identified the body of his mother. He completed all the required paperwork and then took the body. At 11:30 pm, Dhiwar family came to the hospital. And they were given the body but they said that that body was not of Mandakini Dhiwar,” said Deputy Dean Dr Murlidhar Tambe.

He added then the Parkhe family was contacted. “But till then, the last rites of the body were done. They visited SGH again and took custody of Vimal Parkhe. Both the families spoke to each other about the confusion and misunderstanding. The Dhiwar family was handed over the ashes of the deceased,” said Dr Tambe.

Despite several attempts, Uttam Parkhe was not available for comment.
