Two-day workshop on gender equality held in the city

PUNE: As a part of an innovative pan-India initiative that works towards informing and facilitating gender audits’ processes, Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace (WISCOMP) recently held a two-day workshop at the Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts (SSLA).

The workshop was held on gender equity and inclusion in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). It sought to facilitate and institutionalise gender-just norms, policies and practices at HEIs. This workshop seeks to open up spaces within college and university campuses for engaging dialogues to promote and nurture inclusion and equity. 

The two-day workshop comprised several sessions including a student-exclusive session on awareness about a crowd-sourced app which allows the user to check the safety of a location - Safetipin, gender audit held by Kristy E Kelly, a research scholar at Columbia University. 

Right to Information (RTI) activist Anjali Bhardwaj was one of the speakers at the programme. She highlighted the wide disparity in the percentage of RTI applications filed by women in the country.

The experts at the workshop spoke about the need of giving equal treatment to Peace and Conflict Studies and Gender Studies in campuses and also about gender sensitisation. The experts also emphasised on multidisciplinary and multicultural exchanges to eliminate stigmas around gender.
