Treatment Centre for wild animals to come up in city

Pune: The State government has decided to set up a Transit Treatment Centre for wild animals in Bavdhan area, considering the needs of Western Maharashtra and Pune region. Sujay Dodal, Joint Secretary of State Revenue and Forest Department issued an order to that effect last week.

Last year, the Pune Forest Department suggested to the State government to set up the treatment centre. The government approved 22 acres of forest land for the centre at estimated cost of Rs 47 crore. The Forest Department, Pune region suggested three sites - Taljai hills, Bhugaon Road near Bavdhan and Kusgaon. Of these, the Bavdhan site was finalised as the land is of the Forest Department and is centrally located.

According to the State Revenue and Forest Department, there is conflict between wild animals and humans. This is happening in Pune district in Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed and Shirur.

There are rescue and treatment centres in Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune Municipal Corporation area, Nisargakavi Bahinabai Chaudhari zoo in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area and Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre in Junnar area. There is no such kind of facility available in Western Maharashtra.
