Traffic police demand 26 new signals in city

PUNE: Though the city’s traffic signals are not working smoothly due to various reasons, the Pune traffic police have suggested to the municipal corporation to instal 26 signals to ease traffic problems in 12 parts of the city.

The traffic police found that Viman Nagar was one of the crucial areas for traffic congestion, where they suggested that nine signals be installed. The traffic police have written to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Electrical Department on this issue.

There are a total of 242 traffic signals across the city. The PMC Electrical Department installs traffic signals on the demand by the traffic police. The PMC maintains these signals and has deployed two maintenance vans to repair traffic signals. The work has been assigned to a contractor.

Pune Municipal Corporation Electrical Department Superintendent Ramdas Taru said, “The traffic police have written a letter to the corporation and demanded installation of 26 signals in the city to ease the traffic problem.

They have identified the spots. The PMC needs funds to instal the signals. The cost of installation of one signal is Rs 4.5 to Rs 5.50 crore.”

“Right now, we don’t have allocation of funds to instal all 26 signals at one go. We will discuss the issue with the police and instal signals on their priorities,” he added. The PMC Electrical Department officials said, “We receive 10 traffic signal malfunction reports from the police every day.

In the monsoon it increases to around 20 per day. We spend Rs 1 crore every year to repair the signals. There are different types of problems of traffic signal failure. One is power failure, damage to service line or electrical cables and manual interference. Besides that, LED lights often turn off and on irregularly.”
