To curb fatal accidents and rein in people riding at high speed, traffic police will be deployed till 2 am. Police officials said that speeding is a major cause of accidents.
Pune: To curb fatal accidents and rein in people riding at high speed, traffic police will be deployed till 2 am. Police officials said that speeding is a major cause of accidents.
Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham and DCP (Traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh said that the cops will be deployed at select chowks from midnight till 2 am.
As perofficials, several initiatives have been taken in the recent past to manage traffic in the city, which has resulted in 55 per cent reduction in fatal accidents this year, as compared to the same period last year. Now, duty shift has been divided from 9 am till 2 am. During peak hours, the focus will be on better management of traffic. During afternoon, the cops will recover pending fines based on e-challans.
From 9 pm onwards, there will be checking to identify drunk drivers. After midnight, cops will be deployed at select spots like main chowks. They will also take action against private vehicles parked on the roads as per municipal laws wherein fine amount is hefty.
According to police data, in 2018, a total of 253 people died in road mishaps, while in 2017, the number of deaths in road mishaps was 261. The number of persons who were seriously injured in road mishaps in 2018 was 466 and in 2017, the number was 536. In 2017, the number of persons who sustained minor injuries was 314, while this number fell to 225 in 2018.
