Ticketless passengers earn Rlys Rs 4 crore

PUNE: The Pune railway division of Central Railway has fined 70, 983 passengers travelling without a ticket from April to August this year and has generated revenue Rs 4 crore through the fines.

Spokesperson of Pune railway division Manoj Jhawar, said, “Railway officials in our division have been regularly conducting ticket checking drives at various stations. We regularly appeal to the passengers not to travel without a ticket. However, our instructions are often trivialised.”

“During the drives, we impose a fine of Rs 250 on passengers who are found travelling without a ticket, apart from the ticket amount of the respective train journey. If any passenger refuses to pay the fine, he is liable to be arrested on the same grounds by the concerned officials,” said Jhawar.

According to Jhawar, the drives were conducted at the Pune-Malavli, Pune-Baramati, Pune-Miraj and Miraj-Kolhapur sections of the division.

During April to August, the division has registered a total of 1,53,628 cases including cases of passengers travelling without tickets, generating a total revenue of Rs 7.88 crore. This includes cases such as travelling with luggage over the permissible limits and entering the railway station premises without platform tickets.

As compared to last year, during the same period, 1,40,371 cases were found and the railways had collected Rs 6.77 crore. Out of this, 64,139 were cases of travelling without a ticket.

Under the guidance of Pune Divisional Railway Manager Milind Deouskar, Additional DRM Praful Chandra, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Sunil Mishra led the team of ticket inspector and Railway Protection Force.
