Three suicides in a day shocks Pimpri-Chinchwad, cops suspect unemployment as reason

Pimpri: In a sad turn of events incidents of deaths due to suicide seems to have surged in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad area. Three workers committed suicide in three different incidents which took place in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area on one day. Police report that unemployment pushed all three suicides.

The first incident took place in Wakad area near Kaveri Nagar police line area. The deceased was named as Vishwambhar Keshav Shinde (40), a resident of Ramabai Nagar in Pimpri. According to Wakad police, the incident took place on Tuesday. Vishwambhar was a worker and used to earn daily wages and amid the lockdown he was unemployed and it led him to the depression. He strangulated himself on a tree branch.

Aakshay Ramchandra Bansode (27), a resident of Panchananth colony in Kalewadi. According to Wakad police, Aakshay was working in a private company and due to lockdown, he was at his residence for the last two to two and a half months. He committed suicide by hanging himself at the ceiling fan. The incident came into light on Tuesday morning.

In the third incident, an unidentified person committed suicide. Prima facie it seems that the deceased had come to Pune city just prior to lockdown for job search. He was staying Nigdi along with two youths. He was struggling to get job opportunities. Despite the repeated attempt, he failed to get a job and on Tuesday he committed suicide by hanging himself. The Nigdi police are yet to confirm his identity as they are probing the case.

Meanwhile, Sassoon General Hospital in Pune which is the largest state government-run hospital in the state has witnessed 108 cases of suicide during nearly three months amid lockdown. While 29 cases were reported in April, the number rose to 40 in May and 39 by mid-Jun.

Job losses were among the major reasons and this is borne out by the rising number of distress calls made to both government and private mental health helplines Pune during the lockdown period.
