Three-day organic farming fest begins at Krushi Bhavan

PUNE: A three-day Organic Farming Fest from February 6 to 8, which began on Thursday, saw over 60 farmer groups from Pune district participating with their organic produce at Krushi Bhavan in Shivajinagar.

The aim of the event is to bring organic farmers and buyers under a single platform, and to grow awareness about chemical pesticides and fertilizers in food grains, fruits and vegetables.

Organically produced grains such as rice, jawar, bajra, wheat and all types of pulses are on sale, in addition to varieties of fruits and vegetables.

Rahul Baliram Kendre, an organic student, said, “Unlike chemically produced food grains, organic produce does not have any adverse effect on one’s health. In fact, they come with many health benefits. We sell organically produced guava, which has enhanced natural sweetness.”

Anupama Umbardan, a visitor, said, “I like these products, as these are genuine and of good quality. I believe everyone should opt for organic produce, which would benefit them as well as these farmers.”

Lauding the platform this fest is providing, Nanda Bhujbal, a farmer, said the exhibition is giving her a good opportunity to connect with consumers.

A professor in a city college, Vyjanti Trimal, felt this fest is a great way to avoid the middle man and connect directly with consumers. Another visitor, businessman Sujay Khandge, felt people are inclining more towards organic products.

GOOD INITIATIVE FOR FARMERS
Vijay Thube, who is a director at Shashwat Krushi Vikas India Producer Company Ltd, explained, “Such initiatives of farmers’ associations, groups and farmers themselves will help the organic food market. Once a consumer makes a purchase and if he is satisfied with the product quality, then directly he can contact the seller for future orders. This way, the farmer gains long term customers for his product.”
