Surgeon killed in accident

Pune: Renowned  spine surgeon Dr Ketan Khurjekar (44) and driver of his hired car were killed in an accident on Pune-Mumbai Expressway on Sunday night.

Two other doctors are injured. They were all returning to Pune after attending a medical conference in Mumbai. 

According to Pimpri-Chinchwad police, the incident took place at 10.30 pm near Gahunje. They had stopped on the roadside to change a punctured tyre when a bus hit the car from behind. 

The deceased driver was identified as Dnyaneshwar Bhosale (28). The injured doctors Jayesh Pawar and Pramod Bhillare are undergoing treatment. 

Dr Khurjekar was Chief Spine Surgeon with the Sancheti Hospital in Pune. Monday was also his birthday.

Police Inspector Kishor Mhasawade said, “Dr Khurjekar had stepped out of the car to assist the driver in repairing the punctured tyre. The other doctors were also getting out of the car, when the bus hit them.”

The bodies of both deceased were handed over to their family members after autopsy at Talegaon district hospital.

The police said the bus was going from Mumbai to Karnataka. The passengers did not sustain any injuries. The driver fled after the accident and the police have launched a search for him.
