Supriya Sule blames BJP for garbage issue

PUNE: On the ongoing protest by Uruli-Devachi villagers over the open garbage dumping issue, Member of Parliament (MP) Supriya Sule criticised the previous BJP government for not solving the problem. Sule said that the BJP government failed to fulfill its commitment to close down open garbage dumping at Uruli-Devachi garbage depot.

For the last few days, Uruli-Devachi and Phursungi villagers have been conducting an agitation against Pune Municipal corporation (PMC) to stop open garbage dumping at the depot.

On Tuesday, while speaking to the media, Sule said, “During the BJP government’s tenure, the chief minister gave villagers an assurance that they will stop open dumping in Uruli Devachi-Phursungi garbage depot. However, they couldn’t complete their commitment. Now, the Pune city mayor and administration will have to take the issue seriously and solve the problem. Being a representative of this area, villagers met and urged me to look into the matter.”

Meanwhile, PMC Solid Waste Department claimed that they have stopped open garbage dumping since January 2. PMC Solid Waste Department Joint Municipal Commissioner Dyneshwar Molak said, “Corporation is dumping garbage in Uruli-devachi garbage depot. However, we are sending only rejects for bio-mining. It is not open dumping. PMC sends around 200 tonne reject per day for bio-mining.”

At present, the city generates 2,100 tonne garbage daily. PMC processes 1,400 tonne garbage in different processing plants within the city. The remaining 7,00 tonne is sent to Uruli-Phursungi for open dumping. Now, the corporation gives 200 tonne garbage as fertilizer to farmers while 400 tonne garbage is sent to the biomining process. Remaining 100 tonne is processed at the Rocham processing plant.
