State Government Formation Delay Hits Mayors Posts

Pune: Just 12 days remain for the tenure of mayors’ posts to end in 26 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including that of Mukta Tilak in Pune Municipal Corporation. Yet no draw of lots has been declared by the State government so far.

Delay in formation of a new government in the State has also seen many major decisions and appointments getting delayed.

A draw of lots is undertaken to decide reservation for the mayor’s post in the municipal corporations. Tilak’s tenure as mayor ended in September.

However, due to State Assembly elections, the appointment of a new mayor was postponed by three months.

The post of Pune mayor is currently reserved for women candidates, which could change once the draw of lots is conducted.

Sunil Parkhi, Municipal Secretary, PMC, said “The tenure of PMC mayor will end on November 22. Usually, the State government has to declare the reservations for the mayoral posts three or two months before completion of incumbent mayor’s tenure. When the civic body inquired about the date for drawing of lots for the mayoral reservation, the State Secretariat said it will be declared within two or three days.”
