State DGP lauds Pune traffic cops

Pune: Director General of Police (DGP) Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, on Saturday, praised the efforts of the Pune City Police traffic branch in bringing down fatalities in the city. He said that the Pune model will be replicated in other police units for reducing fatal road accidents.

DGP Jaiswal was speaking during the inaugural ceremony of Pune traffic police headquarters on airport road near Golf Course in Yerawada. Commissioner of Police K Venkatesham, Pune Divisional Commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar, State CID chief Atulchandra Kulkarni and other senior officers and citizens were present on the occasion.

“There are about thousands of fatalities annually in road accidents and it is time to take serious measures to bring down the number,” Jaiswal said.

Venkatasham said, “We are using technology to bring efficiency in the department and deliver timely services to the people.”

DCP (traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh apprised DGP Jaiswal about various initiatives by the traffic branch.

According to the traffic branch of Pune city police, till October this year, there has been a 25 per cent reduction in fatal accidents on the city roads, as compared to the same period last year. A total of 215 persons were killed in 204 accidents last year, while this year, 159 persons died in 153 accidents.

DGP Jaiswal also instructed Pune police to install more CCTV cameras on the lines of Mumbai Police, who monitor live footage of about 5,000 cameras installed at major chowks and other places. In Pune, there are about 1,100 cameras whose live footage is monitored by police.
