SSS to contest Assembly polls from 49 seats: Shetti

Pune: Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) leader Raju Shetti on Wednesday announced that the SSS will be contesting from 49 seats in the Vidhan Sabha elections in the State.

Following the defeat in Hatkanangle in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Shetti announced he will not be contesting the election himself but will elect a suitable representative.

Shetti blamed the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) for his defeat in the Lok Sabha election and demanded a ballot-paper voting system. “I do not trust the EVM hence I have written to the Election Commission to consider a ballot-paper voting system in the Assembly elections. We have decided to contest from 49 seats. Around 70 people have joined the SSS,” Shetti said.

He was speaking at a state-level party meet held at a private lawn in Erandwane on Wednesday.

Over 300 farmers attended the meet to discuss the various issues they face.

Speaking on an alliance, Shetti said that while there is no invitation from BJP and Shiv Sena to form an alliance, there are proposals from other parties. “We will take the decision on alliance by August first week. We will also select our candidates to be fielded for Vidhan Sabha elections by August,” added Shetti.

About the proposals he would send to the government, Shetti said the government should waive off the pending electricity bills of farmers. “The government should investigate the corruption in fodder camps. Farmers from the State are struggling to get crop loans and so we will urge the government to approve the loans at earliest. The government is yet to announce the minimum support price (MSP) for kharif crops and so we want the government to declare the same at earliest,” Shetti said.

He said the government should allow milk in a plastic pouch or else it will impact the milk producers and sellers. “We know that in urban areas people would not return milk pouch bags and so government should allow the use of plastic bags for milk pouches,” Shetti said.

He said onion prices have reduced by Rs 400 per quintal and needs government attention so that farmers do not suffer.
