SPPU secures 109th position in Times Higher Education ranking

Pune: Jumping by 79 positions from 188th rank in 2018, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU)  has secured a position at 109 in Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking of the Asian continent in 2019.

The ranking of Asia was declared on Thursday. 

Vice-Chancellor of SPPU Nitin Karmalkar said, “It was a huge leap. These results were proof that the university’s development was going in the right direction. And one of the significant differences in THE ranking was that university has outperformed those universities who have scored higher ranking in National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF). Further, this development was also an encouragement for university stakeholders.”

In NIRF, SPPU had ranked 10th in the university category of India.
 
Varsity has scored a total of 36.4 points in THE ranking. 

THE World University Rankings 2019 includes more than 1,250 universities. In the last two years, SPPU has managed to make its place among 501-600 universities in THE global ranking. While, before this, it ranked among 600-800 universities globally.

THE ranking has also declared the country-wise ranking of top 10 higher educational institutes. SPPU ranks sixth among these while Indian Institute of Science (IISc),  Bangalore secured the first rank followed by IIT, Indore while the third rank is shared by IIT - Bombay, IIT - Roorkee and JSS Academy for Higher Education and Research, Mysore. IIT – Delhi secured the fourth rank.
 
Interestingly, the 10th position was shared by universities including Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore; Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi; Delhi University; Indian Institute of Science and Research (IISER); Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati; IIT Chennai; IIT Bhuvaneshwar; IIT Hyderabad; Jadavpur University, Kolkata; National Institute of Technology (NIT), Roorkee; Punjab University, Chandigarh and Tezpur University, Tezpur.

Nations included in Asian continent are Japan, China, India, Hong Kong, South Korea, East Asian countries, Philipines, Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Iran, Macau, Qatar, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, UAE and others.
