SPPU orders probe into engg paper leak at MIT

Pune: A leakage of first-year engineering mechanics paper of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) was reported immediately after the examination started at MIT, Kothrud on Wednesday morning.

Taking serious note of it, the varsity has said that an action will be taken against the institute for its negligence.

The question paper was sent to the institute at 9.40 am.

However, according to the reports, it went viral at around 10.15 am. Apparently, the exam was scheduled from 10 am to noon on May 23.  Ashok Chavan, Controller of Examination at SPPU, had initially confirmed the paper leak and stated that a team of three members had rushed to the institute for probing the paper leak.

“After we learnt about the paper leak, the department constituted an investigating team which was sent to probe the matter. After the team submits the report of investigation, necessary action will be taken according to vice-chancellor’s orders. Probably, a student has stepped out of the examination hall early and has leaked the paper,” told Chavan.

However, in the evening, officials from the university confirmed that the incident of the paper leak was a hoax. It seems that a couple of students with mischievous motive had circulated the question paper after the exam started at 10 am.

‘There is a possibility of a mischievous act in circulating the question papers by some students. Cognisance in this matter has been taken and if required, a police complaint will be registered as well. Moreover, there has been negligence on part of the institute as well. Hence a strict action will be also taken against them,” clarified officials of the varsity.

The investigating team informed that few coaching class teachers had forwarded three question papers to university’s examination department citing a probability of a paper leak. Out of those, two question papers were from 2014 and 2017. The third question paper was the one which was conducted on Wednesday. The question paper had a watermark printed on it through which, it was clear that the institute had downloaded the question paper half an hour before the exam time.

The paper went viral only after the questions papers were distributed in the class, as someone among the students had stepped out of the examination hall and sent it out, stated the official statement from varsity.

In 2016, the paper leak of first-year electrical engineering was reported nearly an hour before the exam at MIT, Kothrud.
