SPPU to offer Urdu foundation course

PUNE: In the upcoming academic year 2020-21, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will offer an Urdu foundation course on campus. Candidates who have passed Std X, XII or degree courses will be eligible to pursue this course.

The course will include Urdu reading, writing, listening and speaking. The admission to this course will be undertaken as per the rules of SPPU. Every batch will consist of 30 seats. It will be offered by the Hindi department. Details about the admission process will soon be updated on the university website, informed Head of Hindi Department Sadanand Bhosale.

Pune-based advocate Salim Shaikh had approached the university a few years back to start this course, after which the university appointed a committee to formulate the curriculum. The committee led by Bhosale consisted of members including PhD holders 

Azmat Dalal and Uzma Tasneem, Professor Abdul Bari and Dean of Humanities Anjali Khurane.

“Urdu is a cultured and gentle Indian language. It is an important part of Indian culture. At present, it is significant to learn this language to understand Indian society better. Hence, the university has decided to impart a course on this language,” said Savitribai Phule Pune University Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar.
