SPPU to host space sciences event

Pune: For the second time since 35 years, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will host the biannual event in space sciences, three-day National Space Science Symposium (NSSS) in association with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) from Tuesday.

The inauguration will be conducted at IUCAA’s Chandrashekhar auditorium at 9 am. ISRO Chairman K Sivan and former Chairman K Kasturirangan will inaugurate the event.

SPPU first hosted the symposium in December 1983. Important speakers will join the symposium from ISRO as well as other important laboratories like Physical Research Laboratory (Ahmedabad), National Atmospheric Research Lab (Gadanki, Andhra Pradesh), Space Application Centre (Ahmedabad), NCRA (Pune), IUCAA (Pune), Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (Panvel, Navi Mumbai), Indian Institute of Astrophysics (Bengaluru), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology  (Pune), Space Physics Laboratory (Thiruananthapuram).

“This is the biannual interaction of scientists between working in various areas of space science. Almost one-third the number of participants comes from ISRO lab. So interaction with them helps other scientists in their respective fields. Also, discussion on future directions and programmes under space sciences will help other scientists to know updated in space science research and developments,” said SPPU Atmosphere and Space Science Department Head P Pradeep Kumar.

Details of National Space Science Symposium

  • All topics related to space sciences like ionosphere, magnetosphere, thermosphere, astrophysics, planetary systems, atmospheric and space sciences, planetary science and explorations, astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, middle atmosphere, Sun-Earth interactive phenomenon will be discussed during the symposium. 
  • The symposium will have presentations in interdisciplinary areas such as Astrobiology, Modelling of the Atmosphere, LIGO and Square Kilometre Array. 
  • The special plenary sessions will  have presentations related to future space science missions, capacity building in space science and new frontiers in atmospheric science.  
  • The scientific papers will be covered in six parallel sessions, which will have about 180 oral presentations and about 250 posters.
